What is Iontophoresis?

Iontophoresis (eye-onto-for-esis) is an effective treatment primarily to control the sweating of the hands and feet however has recently started to be used for underarm sweating.

Doctors tend to refer patients for a course of treatment after trying stronger antiperspirants. It works by placing your hands and feet in a tray of water and then having a mild electrical current passed through – something that is painless. This should happen for around 30 minutes, once a week, and is thought to be fairly successful in reducing sweating although not in every case.

In the UK, treatment will usually start in a dermatology department for a few weeks and if successful you’ll be required to purchase your own machine for use at home, which costs upwards of £300.
